4学期ライティングクラスの課題「IUCに対する学生の声」

三年以上日本に住んだことがあるが今、日本語で何も話せないような気がする？大学での日本語の授業は上級レベルまで達したはずだが、まだ少女向けのマンガが読めない？「含蓄」、「乱痴気騒ぎ」、「要塞」って言う誰も分かってくれない言葉の意味が分からない？

中近東でも日本語を教えるなどの場数を踏んでいる精鋭の先生たちがずらり、駐日アメリカ大使もお勧めになっている、アメリカ・カナダ大学連合日本研究センター（英訳省略：IUC）！

センターの十ヶ月プログラムの間、日本で働く環境、または研究環境に順応できるようにトレーニングすることを誓う。専攻は大東亜共栄圏の展開、現在のビジネス社会、または十八世紀の芸術であっても、ちゃんとした日本語の環境で実用的で独特な授業がもう用意されている。日常的に話す問題があるならセンターの三学期目の日常会話の授業はぴったりだ。読む能力を伸ばしたい人、センターの名声の高い独自のSKIPプログラムはもう世界中に知られている。ちゃんと勉強すると、たったの十ヶ月の間で常用漢字が全部読めるようになることを保証させていただく。将来日本に関わる予定があるなら、センターは絶対に欠かせない。

このようなプログラムは世界で唯一無二。強調させていただくが、将来日本にいるならこのプログラムに入らなければならない。

最悪の場合でもこのような馬鹿で役に立たないパンフレットを書けるようになる。

Comments on the overall design of the program

• From what I heard about other programs, the IUC Program is by far, one of the best intensive Japanese language programs available. The attention given to students by the teaching staff was amazing.
• I was very pleased with the program in terms of the quality of the teachers and the curriculum. The Japanese teachers here are the finest I have ever had: they provide the clearest explanations about Japanese that I have ever received, are dedicated, and have high expectations. I was particularly happy with the rigorous grammar instruction at the beginning of the year and the project work at the end of the year.
• I liked the way that there was an abundance of study materials so that people could choose what they wanted to work on at different times; even though we were studying the same things overall, we could focus on different things (e.g. kanji, writing, reading).

To the director

• Dr. Butler is an inspiration to all the students at the Center. I think to have someone who has lived in Japan so long and who truly appreciates and understands Japanese culture provides good motivation for Center students. I really appreciated his letter of recommendation.
• I liked that everyone always ended up laughing a lot during meetings. It's great to have a director who brings both leadership and humor to the Center.
• Thank you for making time to talk to me and help me out with my career goals.

To the teachers

• You give so much of yourselves and are so patient. You are the best of group of Japanese teachers I have ever had.
• You are top of the line--some of the most hardworking, professional people I have ever met in my life; thank you for your patience, dedication, and hardwork.
• The teachers at IUC are the most interesting group of Japanese teachers that I have met so far. Mostly everyone has experience outside of Japan, so it makes their opinions and viewpoints different from regular people. They were also very open, and I never felt the hesitation to ask a question or favor when I needed it.

To the office staff

• The office staff were tremendously helpful with every aspect of living in Japan. Thank you very much.
• Thank you for your constant support and answering all of our questions, even to edit certain things!!
• Everyone in the office was always really helpful and approachable. I think that enhanced the IUC experience and made for a great, positive learning environment. It is much appreciated.
